The Problem

Urban transportation faces a pivotal moment, with fixed bus routes failing to meet the flexible, on-demand needs of city dwellers. This inefficiency and dissatisfaction among urban commuters present WestLink with a chance to revolutionize public transit through Jitney, a smart bus service that optimizes routes in real-time based on user demand, promising improved urban mobility, reduced environmental impact, and a modernized public transportation experience.

The Solution

Drawing inspiration from Curitiba's transport system, Jitney offers a demand-responsive bus service to address WestLink's urban transit issues. Combining efficient transport principles with advanced technology, Jitney adapts to commuter needs in real-time, ensuring a seamless travel experience, reducing congestion, and emissions, and steering WestLink towards a smarter, sustainable mobility future.

The result

The aim of introducing Jitney to WestLink's urban transit system is to revolutionize public transportation by providing a smart, flexible, and efficient service that dynamically adjusts to commuter demand. Our goal is to enhance the urban commuting experience by reducing wait times, improving route optimization, and increasing overall satisfaction. By leveraging real-time data and advanced technology, Jitney seeks to minimize environmental impact, optimize operational efficiency, and encourage a shift towards more sustainable urban mobility solutions. Ultimately, we aspire to set new standards for public transportation, making it a more attractive, reliable, and green choice for city dwellers.

Dealing with unpredictable bus schedules and constant overcrowding has made commuting the worst part of my day. We desperately need a flexible, responsive public transport system that adapts to our actual needs, making travel both efficient and tolerable.

Information architecture

In choosing a monolithic architecture for the Jitney application, we aimed for a streamlined development and deployment process to ensure reliability and rapid iteration in the service's initial stages. This architecture simplifies monitoring, enhances performance consistency, and accelerates the development cycle, allowing us to quickly adapt to user feedback and urban mobility demands. While designed for flexibility and scalability, our monolithic framework is poised for future evolution into a more modular approach as Jitney expands, ensuring we maintain a robust foundation while staying agile and innovative.

Wireframes

The UI of the Jitney app employs an atomic design framework, organizing UI elements from the simplest atoms (like buttons) to complex organisms (such as navigation menus). This method ensures consistency, accelerates development, and simplifies maintenance by reusing components, facilitating a seamless and cohesive user experience across the platform.

Refining the Service Logic

A significant challenge for Jitney is refining the service logic to ensure response times significantly undercut the typical 20-minute bus wait, without compromising the ability to accommodate multiple customer journeys efficiently. Unlike the near-instantaneous pairing found in services like Uber, orchestrating dynamic mini bus routes requires sophisticated algorithmic solutions that can adapt in real-time to fluctuating demand, traffic conditions, and diverse passenger destinations. This complexity underscores the necessity for a more nuanced approach to route optimization and scheduling.

Leveraging Data Science for Simulation

Addressing these complexities and ensuring a rapid, reliable service model necessitates employing advanced data science techniques. By simulating various operational scenarios using real-world data, we can refine our algorithms to better predict and respond to user demand, optimize routes, and minimize wait times. This data-driven approach will allow us to build a more comprehensive business case, demonstrating not only the feasibility of Jitney's innovative model but also its potential to redefine urban mobility with a level of precision and efficiency that traditional bus services cannot match.

Design system

We created a sitemap to show the structure of the platform and how the pages were connected. This allowed us to understand the hierarchy of information and how the user would navigate through the platform.
